AIPAD Has Something for Everyone

The Photography Show presented by AIPAD opens tomorrow at Pier 94 in New York City. Marking its 39th edition, the event will feature more than 90 galleries representing 41 cities around the world, over 30 book dealers and publishers, 12 AIPAD Talks, a special exhibition curated by Alec Soth, and more. The diverse work on display consists of contemporary, modern, and 19th century photographs, as well as photo based art, video, and new media. The fair is the longest-running art fair dedicated to the photographic medium.

Prominent curators, collectors, artists and journalists participating in the AIPAD Talks include Vince Aletti, Deana Lawson, Sarah Hermann Meister, An-My Lê, Stephen Shore, among many others.

Award-winning photographer Alec Soth has curated A Room for Solace: An Exhibition of Domestic Interiors. The photographs selected by Soth speak “to the possibility of finding refuge during turbulent times,” writes AIPAD in a statement.

There are other highlights too, such as Dawoud Bey’s new series, Night Coming Tenderly, Black, which can be found at Stephen Daiter Gallery. The landscape’s Bey created for the series reimagine the movements of fugitive slaves as they traverse the Underground Railroad. An elaborate set built by the photographer duo Cortis and Sonderegger depicting Ansel Adam’s Moon and Half Dome, will be on display at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. Etherton Gallery will host a solo exhibition of Danny Lyon’s work that includes a large-scale collage providing a visual narrative of the artist’s influences. Rarely seen photographs by Dorothea Lange that were mined from a private collection are on view alongside some of Lange’s iconic images at Richard Moore Photographs. Zanele Muholi, the South African artist and visual activist known for her self-portraits and documentation of LGBTQ lives, will have work at Yancey Richardson Gallery.

The work of Joey Ferrell – who, at 18, may be the youngest photographer to ever exhibit at AIPAD – is at Gary Edwards Gallery. And finally (though the aforementioned list only hints at the full 2019 AIPAD roster) prints made by one of the very inventors of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot, will be on view at Hans P. Jr. Fine Photographs.

AIPAD has something for everybody, from long-time collectors to those just discovering their love of photography.
