A New Generation of Contemporary Photographers

For the 3rd year Foam has returned to the spacious Red Hook Labs in Brooklyn, New York, to present Foam Talent. The group exhibition brings together a new generation of international artists working with an impressively wide array of subjects and techniques.

Selected through the annual Foam Talent Call, a search for photographers under the age of 35, the winners offer insight into the state of contemporary photography. This year a total of 1,853 artists from 74 countries submitted their portfolios.

The 20 photographers included in the 2019 exhibition, cross “the borders of the photographic medium with remarkable ease,” writes Foam in a statement. The space at Red Hook Labs allows for several installations where the immersive quality of a project is highlighted alongside more traditional photography.

“In this digital age, there seems to be an increasing interest for geological time and the cycle of time expressed in projects around the themes of night fall, processing grief, nostalgia and homesickness,” writes Foam. “Archival material continues to play an important role, as well as complex and lengthy research in pervasive socio-political factors that influence our everyday life.”

Through the exhibition, Foam creates a comprehensive perspective on the diverse and surprising developments in contemporary photography.

The Foam Talents 2019 are: Florian Amoser (Switzerland), He Bo (China), Valentine Bo (Ukraine), Chen Zhe (China), Maisie Cousins (United Kingdom), Sylvain Couzinet-Jacques (France), Durimel (France), Sophie Gabrielle (Australia),
Eric Gyamfi (Ghana), Thomas Hauser (France), Gregory Eddi Jones (United States), Stelios Kallinikou (Cyprus), Takashi Kawashima (Japan), Dima Komarov (Russia), Lilly Lulay (Germany), Jaya Pelupessy (Netherlands), Daniel Shea (United States), Senta Simond (Switzerland), Salvatore Vitale (Italy) and Carmen Winant (United States).
