2014 New York Fashion Week: Behind the Scenes

New York Fashion Week (NYFW), held in February and September, annually, usually lasts seven to nine days and brings together fashion houses from all over the world. Collections are revealed to buyers, the press and the public. NYFW Fall/Winter 2014 began February 6, and continues through Sunday, February 13, 2014. New York City-based photographer Shawn Brackbill was hired by Vogue and other clients to shoot, mostly from backstage, 18 shows between last Friday and yesterday. The shows included Edun, DKNY, Phillip Lim, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, Rag & Bone, Thakoon, Jason Wu and Peter Som, some of which are featured in today’s gallery. Shooting backstage has its challenges. Navigating the PR and security to get the access needed is a big part of it, as is finding great shots. “For me,” Brackbill says, “it’s a constant hunt for images and approaches to creating interesting moments. Sometimes there are as many as 30-plus photographers backstage.” Brackbill tries to arrive about an hour and a half before the show is scheduled to start and stays a few minutes past the show’s end. Clients want their images ASAP. “For Vogue the turnaround time is five hours from the scheduled start of the show. While they prefer a fairly tight edit, 60 to 80 images, sometimes it’s necessary to send more. I send the images with as much quick adjusting as possible so they’re ready to go as a medium-high res file.” For more on Brackbill’s NYFW shoots, check out his Tumblr and to learn how shooting fashion week has helped launch is career, check out PDN‘s article.
