A Storm is Brewing

Mitch Dobrowner has chased storms since 2009, photographing monsoons, tornadoes and thunderstorms through out the American Midwest and West, working with a storm chaser named Robert Hill. “For me, photographing storms is a combination of landscape photography, slow and reflective, with the adrenaline of a sports event, where things can change any second,” Dobrowner writes in the afterword for his new Aperture book, Stormswhich will be released later this month. “I experience storms as living beings, organic things, both rational and unpredictable in the way they look, how they move, grow, and die. Every storm is different; each has a unique character. My job is to capture a ‘portrait’ of each storm I encounter, an image that does each one justice as if the storm was a person.” Starting this Saturday, September 7, Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles is exhibiting prints of Dobrowner’s work, which won him the Sony World Photographer of the Year 2012 award. The exhibition opens with a reception for the artist on Saturday, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and continues through October 26th.

  1. Really fantastic, and a well-deserved award. I’m so glad you’ve brought artistic vision, technical ability, and a storm-chaser’s bravado together to create these wonderful images.
