Sasha Maslov’s photographs from the series Forgotten Village document the everyday reality of a coal miner living in Ukraine. Maslov’s low-key, understated approach gives these photographs monumental meaning. Maslov masterfully creates the atmosphere of a mine. Its tight and enclosed space is present even in the workers’ changing room, the manager’s office and the recreation room. This series is on view in the exhibit Forgotten Village at Sputnik Gallery from June 30 to September 3, 2011.

Sasha Maslov was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Maslov’s works were recently exhibited at Project Fabrika in Moscow and the Ukrainian Art Foundation in Kiev.
