PDN Photo of the Day

Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’

As one of the contributing artist’s in Apple’s new “Start Something New” campaign for 2015, which features work created by artists on iPhone, iPad and Mac and apps, photographer Marcelo Gomes was asked to create, well, something new. The series of three images Gomes created for the projects were influenced by painting. “I simply love (especially figurative) painting,” Gomes told PDN via email. “There’s a certain texture I look for in my own pictures that are very pleasing, in a tactile way. Some painters that have been on my mind recently are: Richard Diebenkorn, Eugene Delacroix (Just saw “Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi” recently, and it blew me away), Francis Bacon, JMW Turner and a few others.”

Though shot on the iPhone 6 Plus using the Slow Shutter! app, his process for creating these was similar to his regular photography process. “Though I didn’t have precise control over aperture and length of exposure, the way the images are created is basically the same: low light situations + longer exposure times + slight movement.”

Gomes’s work, as well as that of other participating artists in the project, appears on Apple.com and in Apple retail stores around the world. Information about the artists and the work they created is available on Apple.com and through the Apple Store app.

To hear more about the work, join Gomes, along with photographer Austin Mann, artist Jingyao Guo, and director Thayer Allyson Gowdy at the Apple Store in SoHo for an event on Thursday, January 8, from 6–7 pm. —Amy Wolff
