PDN Photo of the Day

California State of Mind

It’s easy to understand why people find California so appealing; there’s access to big cities, with the option to escape to the mountains, the ocean or the desert within minutes. Canadian-born photographer Bryce Duffy has called California his home for over a decade, and through his editorial and commercial work, he’s documented the human experience and explored our relationship with the world. For a new group show called “Lost in Space” at Design Matters, a contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles, Duffy included personal work that brings the viewer into the environment he photographed, almost giving the feeling of actually being there.

“[The work] represents the time I spend searching for moments that return me to a feeling I remember experiencing as a child—that feeling of being overtaken with the vastness and depth I experienced in the places I visited,” Duffy said in a statement. In addition to prints, Duffy includes projections of aerial images on light tables placed on the floor of the gallery.

“Lost in Space” also comprises personal work from photographer and director Todd Cole, and artist JOW, who are also now based in L.A. The show was curated by Kim Jacobs, who said in a statement that the artists’ work all share “a fragmented frame of reference and a strong tactility. It begs you to just feel it.”

Currently on view at Design Matters, “Lost in Space” runs through October 13, 2014.
