Joel Grey: The Billboard Papers

“Joel Grey: The Billboard Papers” and two other exhibitions (“Max Kozloff: New York Over The Top” and “William John Kennedy Warhol Love Indiana“) open with a reception tonight from 6pm to 8pm at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City. Ten of Grey’s large-scale color photographs of torn and decaying billboards from the streets of New York City are included. The gallery commented: “The photographs resemble paper collages, revealing dramatic and unexpected layers of the billboards’ past.” A book by the same name, “The Billboard Papers” (Pointed Leaf Press, 2013), includes 28 images, and sold in a limited edition of 600 numbered copies.

Though “The Billboard Papers” is Grey’s fourth photography book, he is more commonly known as an actor, singer and dancer. Grey’s role as the Master of Ceremonies in both the stage and screen versions of “Cabaret” won him an Academy Award, a Tony Award and a Golden Globe. Grey’s other book titles include “Pictures I Had to Take” (powerHouse, 2003), “Looking Hard at Unexpected Things” (Steidl, 2006) and “1.3 – Images from My Phone” (powerHouse, 2009).

“Joel Grey: The Billboard Papers” will be on view through October 19, 2013 at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City.
