Allegorical Tales and The U.S. Debut of Bastiaan Woudt

Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia, is hosting the debut U.S. exhibition of Dutch artist Bastiaan Woudt, showing a selection from his 2017 series, Mukono. “In the tradition of Walker Evans and the Farm Security Administration photographers, Woudt tells a community’s story by focusing on the individual and intimate,” writes the gallery in the press release. To create Mukono, Woudt, a largely self-taught artist, traveled to Mukono, Uganda. There, he photographed water resources in a region with limited access to safe water, transforming a documentary project into a visual poem evincing a timeless aesthetic. Described as “allegorical and cohesive” by the gallery, Mukono is “distinguished by a blend of classicism and contemporary post-production techniques.”

Bastiaan Woudt (b. 1987) studied the history of photography through devouring photo books and visiting museums and fairs. He has a strong preference for classic subjects, such as portraits and nudes, and we see references to illustrious periods from photography throughout his work, such as Surrealism and the documentary photography of the 1960s and 70s. Woudt gives his own graphic and wholly contemporary twist to the classical.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 13th from 6-8pm, with Wouldt in attendance. On Saturday, July 14th at 11am, Woudt will give an artist’s talk at the gallery, followed by questions and a book signing.
