Niall McDiarmid’s new book “Town to Town” features more than 60 portraits made in over 200 towns in the UK. Forming a poignant portrait of Britain, McDiarmid’s colorful images were taken from Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands to the historic town of Bodmin in Cornwall, England.
Created over the course of seven years, McDiarmid, who is Scottish, traveled through multiple town centers with the same chains of coffee shops and retailers, but found that each town expressed an individuality due to its residents.
“As a nation we are blessed with talent for being individuals who are not afraid to stick out from a crowd,” says McDiarmid in the press release.
The portraits, mostly shot on film, capture the unique style of those he photographs. Many also record shop fronts or advertisements, rooting the images and his subjects in the context of the early 21st century.
An exhibition of the project will be shown at the Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol from January 31 – May 12, 2018. “Town to Town” is published by RRB PhotoBooks.
