Over 25 years since Danish photographer Krass Clement captured people on the move through the shadowy streets of Dublin, Ireland, the images have been published for the first time in a book aptly titled “Dublin.” The images were made during three short visits to the capital city while completing a three-month residency at Tyrone Gurhie Centre in Annaghmakerrig, Ireland. During the residency Clement also photographed his acclaimed book “Drum”, which was shot one evening in 1991 on only three rolls of film.
“Dublin” trails the journey of a flaneur covertly glimpsing inside doorways and around the corners of urban streets. The book as a whole gives “the impression of walking at pace and staying in the shadows,” states the press release, “a visual stream of consciousness on a stroll through the city.”
Photographed in black and white, the images reveal a sense of melancholia and solitude, the characters passing each other on the pavement toward unknown destinations.
A self-taught photographer, Clement was born in 1964 and has published more than 20 photobooks.
The publication of “Dublin” coincides with an exhibition of work by Clement at The Gallery of Photography in Dublin from 14 November 2017 – 14 January 2018.
