Now in its fourth year, PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai, an art fair focused solely on photography, brings together 50 galleries and institutions from 16 countries in Asia, Europe, the U.S. and the Middle East, for a show that runs from September 8 to 10 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Among its offerings are individual exhibitions highlighting developments in color photography, artists who blend photography with other media, the work of the late Ren Hang, and images from the private collections of prominent Chinese collectors and archives.

The show “Insights | A Color Explosion” includes celebrated pioneers of color photography such as William Eggleston and Harold Edgerton along with contemporary artists such as Jiang Pengyi, who makes dreamy abstractions by experimenting with color photographic materials, and Feng Li, who photographs colorful clouds of dust. “Staged” focuses on artists who work with installation art, sculpture, video, performance and painting to reinterpret photography, and includes the duo Birdhead, who depict their experience of daily life in Shanghai with a large-scale grid of gritty black and white photos. And in “The Collectors’ Exhibition,” four of China’s most influential art collectors open their archives to show artists including René Burri, JR and Yang Fudong, whose narrative-driven work includes film and still photography. The aim, as the organizers write, PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai, is to “bring together emerging and established artists who push the boundaries of the photographic medium, and challenge the notion of what photography can be.”
