Boudoir photographer Lindsay Rae was in a self-described “artist funk” when she decided to shoot something for herself. “I find that this happens to me often—shooting in a studio all of the time can sort of take away that creative aspect of the business—so every other month I vow to shoot a project just for myself,” she explains.
Rae reached out to her muse, Beth, to work with her on a personal shoot. Rae notes that her favorite part of the resulting series, “Che’Arch,” is that they went into it without a plan in place—the only decision was for Beth to wear nothing but glitter on her shoulders. Rae and Beth shot at Che’Arch, an event venue and workspace in Troy, New York. “The low-key, natural light that filters into the space is what my shadowy dreams are made of,” Rae says. “We decided to keep focused on the body form, [using] the limited natural light to paint her form.”
Photographed with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and three lenses—a Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro—Rae says that the goal of “Che’Arch” is to show off all aspects of the female form—not just the curves, but also the lines and edges. She elaborates: “We wanted the images to evoke both a sexual desire in the viewer, while still having enough intrigue to be seen as fine art.” To achieve this while shooting with only natural light, Rae says it came down to positioning the figure in the light, instead of moving the light around the subject.
