Since the start of his long career, George Tice has made the small towns and urban centers of New Jersey the subject of his large format black and white photographs. A new show, “George Tice: Urban Landscapes,” on view until October 28 at Joseph Bellows Gallery in La Jolla, California, collects vintage contact prints from Tice’s work in the 1970s with more recent studies of his home state. Filled with painted and neon signs, lonely gas stations and diners but few people, Tice cites the work of Edward Hopper and Walker Evans as inspirations. With both, he shares an interest in a poignant view of everyday American life. As Tice says in a statement, “It takes the passage of time before an image of a commonplace subject can be assessed. The great difficulty of what I attempt is seeing beyond the moment; the everydayness of life gets in the way of the eternal”.
