Since the late 1970s, Sally Gall has been exploring the natural world, photographing arresting arrangements of water, sky and land with an eye for metaphor and poetry. For her new series “Aerial,” on view in a show opening today at Julie Saul Gallery in New York City and running until October 22, Gall takes on a more mundane subject, transforming laundry drying on the line into swirling biomorphic forms. Shot in Italy, Cuba and Croatia, the images make colorful abstractions from dresses and sheets silhouetted against the sky, bringing to mind fluttering sea creatures or icy landscapes. In them, Gall sees references to abstract painters ranging from Georgia O’Keefe to Wassily Kandinsky. Gall says in a statement from the gallery, “what started as an exploration of humanity and an appreciation for the most basic of activities, hanging laundry to dry, has expanded into an exploration of the abstract and otherworldly. Ordinary identifiable objects become mysterious, strange, outside the human realm. An element of eros is added as I am literally looking up someone’s skirt.”
