An Origami Menagerie in a Blue and Orange World

In Reine Paradis’s hyperstylized series “Jungle,” the Los Angeles-based French photographer performs chic, abstracted activities in a simplified, deep blue landscape—she plays miniature golf, she climbs a palm tree, she hits the beach. In these odd scenarios, shot on location throughout the West and then altered, Paradis is accompanied by bright orange accessories and matching, apparently-life-sized origami animals—a flamingo, a crocodile, a pair of lions—whose flat graphic shapes fit right into this strange world. The series is on view at Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles until July 16. Writes Paradis about the series: “Shot throughout America, the series Jungle takes us on an introspective journey across a symbolic and chromatic world, projected above the limit of reality and imagination. Each scene is imagined and conceptualized before shooting in real locations. All items are meticulously designed and prepared ahead according to the initial vision of the scene.”
