Women in the Arts

In celebration of Women’s History Month in March, Salena Art Gallery at Long Island University in downtown Brooklyn opened “100 Portraits: Women Artists,” an exhibition of portraits by Barbara Yoshida.

“This project began as women were just becoming visible in numbers in the art world. It documents some of the most important contributors to the arts, and it puts a face on many artists, known and unknown, who are important yet continue to be unseen by the general public,” Yoshida said in a statement about the exhibition. A fine art photographer, also known for her large format landscapes (her resume includes six artist residencies with the National Park Service), Yoshida has documented female artists in their studios and homes since 1990. Her project includes artists who work in different media, and representatives from multiple generations.

The exhibition has been extended through April 25, 2015.
