Coco Chanel: Behind the Sunglasses

Douglas Kirkland, one of Look and LIFE magazine’s most noted photographers, spent three weeks with fashion icon Coco Chanel in 1962. First published in 2008 to coincide with the 125th anniversary of Chanel’s birth, and now in its fourth printing, Coco Chanel: Three Weeks 1962 (Glitterati), offers a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a fashion icon. “Sent to Paris on assignment for LOOK, Kirkland ended up living with Chanel for three weeks, capturing the public and private moments of the legend herself,” the publisher said in a statement.

Over the course of 21 days, Kirkland documented Chanel in her Parisian apartment in the Ritz, traveling in between appointments by car, fittings with models, all while wearing her iconic hat. After proving himself as a fashion photographer, Kirkland developed a comfortable rapport with “Mademoiselle.” Kirkland writes in Coco Chanel, “I shot some fashion to please Mademoiselle but had to have the film developed in Paris to show her before she would trust me.”
