A Giant Show

Giant Artists, an agency based in Los Angeles, recently opened an exhibition that highlights the wide variety of work produced by the photographers they represent. The exhibition gives the agency and its photographers “a chance to step outside the commercial lens, and showcase [their] personal and fine-art work,” says Giant Artists’ founder Jen Jenkins. Curated by Audrey Landreth, a veteran photo editor and curator also based in Los Angeles, “Giant Artists EXPAND” runs through February 29, 2015 at Design Matters.

After seeing a recent show at Design Matters, Jenkins and Landreth approached owner Mark Bittoni with the idea for the exhibition, and luckily he had an open slot in his schedule. That was the easy part. Image selection and production were more challenging. “Curating a group show is always a tricky puzzle,” Landreth told PDN via email. “Using the word ‘expand’ as a loose launching pad, I dove into each artist’s body of work looking for images that transcend the daily assignment to reflect a more personal and artful side,” Landreth says. “I was looking for work that steers towards the abstract and dreamy, work that one would want to take home and gaze at.”

In addition to photography and design/illustration, the show offers a few videos by the agency’s filmmakers. Among them are two music videos by Brooklyn-based collective Weird Days, a video for The Funs directed by Michael Schmelling and “This Must Be the Only Fantasy,” a collaboration with fashion house Rodarte, directed by Todd Cole.
