“Bay Views,” Mark Lyon‘s ongoing project, is a series of photographs taken from inside self-service car washes looking out to their surrounding environments. “The spaces appear secluded as they are captured at night with exposures timed around the fluctuating cycles of street lights and traffic patterns,” Lyon says in his artist’s statement. “Variations in seasonal weather conditions, as well as the shifting balance of interior and exterior light transform these ubiquitous spaces into something unfamiliar.”

Lyon needed patience to make these images. For example, “Defunct (Summer),” (Slide 1), required multiple visits, as Lyon wanted rain to help shine the floor and soften the background. “I could barely see a thing in the viewfinder,” he told PDN via email. “It was an 8-minute exposure based on a street light cycling on and off semi-sporadically. When it turned off, I got the deep color and more clarity on the tree shadows.”

Lyon was a Photographer’s Fellowship Fund Recipient from The Center for Photography at Woodstock in 2008. His project, “Bay Views,” along with work from previous recipients from the last ten years, will be on display at The Center for Photography at Woodstock from November 15 through January 11, 2015. The exhibition, “Home Grown: Fellowship Recipients 2005-2014,” opens with a reception on November 15 from 5-7pm.
