Life’s a Beach

Documentary photographer Oliver Weber was born in Munich, Germany, but has been living on La Gomera—one of Spain’s Canary Islands off the northwest coast of mainland Africa—for eight years. La Gomera is, Weber says, a “quiet, very modest little island, full of nature,” which is what makes his project on neighboring holiday resort Playa de Las Américas (on the most populous Canary Island of Tenerife), such a contrast. Weber’s series “Social Life at Beach” exposes the tourists who venture there to escape the cold European winter and see very little of the island. As Weber says, “No real Spaniard goes into the midday sun on the beach and gets a sunburn.” While Weber sees travel as a way to “get in touch with the natives; to learn more about the country I am traveling in,” the tourists he depicts in “Social Life” are the complete opposite. These vacationers instead remind us that the resort is less about the location and more about the simulation of paradise.
