Portrait of a Pilgrim: The El Camino de Santiago

During the summers of 2012 and 2013, New York City-based photographer Michael George walked over 1,000 miles on El Camino de Santiago (the English translation is The Way of St. James) in southern France and northern Spain. He released the resulting photo project, “Portrait of a Pilgrim,” on his website last week. George tells PDN via e-mail, “the project was deeply personal. I first walked the Camino in 2012 for myself. After seeing the history and its influence on so many thousands of people I made a Kickstarter to go back and document it properly.” George organized the project on his website into nine unique parts: Introduction, Chapters I – V, Portraits & Stories, Glossary and Credits. George says he’s completed his project on Camino de Santiago but would like to make it part of a larger project on pilgrimage routes around the world to “explore how religion and spirituality is finding new roots in modern society.”
