Jackson Fine Art is celebrating the freewheeling spirt of summer with an exhibition of Danny Lyon’s iconic series, The Bikeriders (1968).

Lyon was 21 years old, a student at the University of Chicago and a member of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), when he began riding with and photographing the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club. “The resulting photographs are intimate, democratic, and revelatory, offering a gritty yet humanistic view that subverts a commercialized image of Americana,” writes the gallery in the press release.

In 2014, Lyon told the audience at the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar that, “In my America, people were all different, they were handsome, and everything around them was beautiful. And most of all, they were free.” He added that ultimately, all of his projects are “about the existential struggle to be free.”
