A Summertime Mosaic

Robin Rice Gallery’s Summertime Salon 2019 brings together the works of 58 gallery artists and nearly 100 photographs. The annual exhibition, on view through September 22, is presented salon-style. Artworks hang from floor to ceiling, turning the walls of the gallery into a mosaic of variously sized artworks in sepia, color, and black and white. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice.

“Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before,” states the press release. “Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths.”

The 2019 invitational image, “Ventre Tortue, Paris” by Gladys, pictures a woman’s torso in black and white. The bright photograph evokes the sense of summer through the sheer mesh skirt falling at the woman’s waist and the tortoise shell covering most of her body, like protective armor or a shady retreat from the sun.
