Brooklyn is a place with a lot of character and has deep pride in its institutions: The Brooklyn Dodgers, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, the Cyclone, and, not least, the Brooklyn Bridge. These are only a few of the urban icons that contribute to the love affair many have with Brooklyn, several of which have been chronicled in novels, poems, songs, films, and photographs, making it the legend it is today.
Today, the borough is a cultural capital with countless artists, designers, architects, filmmakers, dancers, writers, and musicians living there. “Brooklyn is an attitude. It’s got more grit, chutzpah, and moxie than anyplace else,” writes Rizzoli, the publisher of Brooklyn Photographs Now in the press release.
From Coney Island, to Prospect Park, to Red Hook, to Williamsburg, the spirit of New York’s biggest borough is the star of Brooklyn Photographs Now, edited by Marla Hamburg Kennedy.
The collection of images, many never published before, is a testimony to Brooklyn’s dynamism: it’s refusal to stop changing, as well as an unwillingness to let go of some of its more traditional aspects. Photographs of new high-rises are alongside brick row house; portraits of famous monuments are juxtaposed with bodegas and pizzerias.
Brooklyn Photographs Now includes works by acclaimed photographers like Mark Seliger, Jamel Shabazz, and Barbara Mensch and also features the work of many emerging talents. Together, they bring an artist’s perspective to Brooklyn, a place several of the photographers in the book call home.
