The Way We Live Now: Aperture Summer Show

Selected from more than 1,000 submissions, the 2018 Aperture Summer Open, The Way We Live Now, features 18 image makers looking to examine the rapid pace of life in the 21st century. Now on view at Aperture Foundation in New York City, the works in the exhibition reckon with politics, beauty, self-expression and society at large. Among them are multilayered portrayals of Latinx, Native American and queer communities; chronicles of the crises of opioid addiction and mass incarceration in the United States; accounts of the built environment, from Israel to China; and meditations on African American and diasporic culture, gender and fashion. “Together the artists in this exhibition,” writes the gallery in the press release, “are gathering evidence about how we define images and about how images define our lives.”

The Way We Live is curated by Siobhán Bohnacker, senior photo editor, the New Yorker; Brendan Embser, managing editor, Aperture magazine; Marvin Orellana, photo editor, New York magazine; and Antwaun Sargent, independent writer and critic.
