PDN Photo of the Day

Eighteen Years with The Who

In 1976, William Snyder first photographed The Who in concert as a fan from the cheap seats. He had no idea 24 years later he would become the official photographer for them, a post he’s now held for 18 years. His work with the band is the subject of a new book called Join Together (With the Band). It documents The Who onstage and off and also reveals Snyder’s journey from a young fan to a member of The Who’s “family.”

“It’s every rock ‘n’ roll fan’s dream,” says Snyder of the work. “To hang out backstage with their favorite band. To walk around on the same stage with them. To have them talk about you from the stage. To be on the plane with them. To tour across the country with them.”

Since photographing that first show in the 70s, Snyder’s goal has been to capture the emotional experience of being at a Who concert. “I’m not interested in basic, good-looking, clean, safe, predictable photographs,” he says, adding, “I want want it feels like.”

With a forward written by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, Join Together has been given the stamp of approval by Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey. Snyder has chosen to donate 50% of the book’s profits to Teen Cancer America.

Join Together (With the Band) is available for pre-order.
