PDN Photo of the Day

Vogue Italia’s First Photo Festival

Next week, Milan hosts the inaugural Photo Vogue Festival, a five day event organized by the Italian branch of the Condé Nast magazine, described as “an international festival entirely dedicated to fashion photography.” From November 22 to 26, the city will host more than 30 photography shows and a range of events including lectures, conferences, portfolio reviews and parties.

Among the shows put on by Vogue Italia is “PHOTOVOGUE/inFashion” at BASE Milano, which collects images from the magazine’s online fashion photography platform, a partnership with the New York agency Art + Commerce. Selected by a group that includes Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani and photo editor Alessia Glaviano as well as gallerists Peter MacGill and Michael Hoppen, curator Charlotte Cotton, Lagos Photo Festival founder Azu Nwagbogu and Paris Photo Director Florence Bourgeois, the show include images from 30 rising fashion photographers from around the world.

One of them is Kiki Xue, a Chinese photographer based in Paris, who has been selected from the show’s participants to shoot a feature for Vogue Italia. A painter and math student turned photographer, Xue told the magazine last year that after studying art, “I envisioned photography as a simple art form, which needed observation, imagination and thought.” When he eventually picked up a camera, he was, like many, seduced by its simplicity, bringing a lush look to simple forms. Photography, he believed, was “more straightforward and real than painting.”
