PDN Photo of the Day

Eye on Edinburgh

This time of year in Edinburgh, Scotland, the nights never get fully dark. That extra light is a good excuse for a photography festival—this year marks the third run for the Retina Scottish International Photography Festival, which highlights work from more than 50 local and international photographers in shows that span eight venues and five weeks, from June 24 to July 30. There are fashion-inspired images that range from Jason Bell’s moody celebrity portraits and Kareem Black’s edgy, poppy nightlife to David Boni’s etherial portraits and C.J. Monk’s glamorous slapstick. Alma Haser’s unsettling photo collages, from her series “Cosmic Surgery,” transform her subjects’ faces into origami nightmares. Some photographers look at life far from Scotland—Dougie Wallace’s “Road Wallah” series depicts the chaos inside Mumbai taxis, while Kayhan Jafar-Shaghaghi’s images are an eloquent study of Iranian saffron farmers. Both photographers, however, have local ties—Wallace grew up in Glasgow, while Jafar-Shaghaghi lives in Edinburgh. At least while the days are long, the world feels small.
