Refugee,” a new exhibition on display through August 21 at the Annenberg Space for Photography investigates the global refugee crises through the work of five photographers with varied approaches to the medium. The exhibition features newly commissioned work by Lynsey Addario, Omar Victor Diop, Graciela Iturbide, Martin Schoeller and Tom Stoddart, who collectively visited 11 nations worldwide to create stories about displaced people. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, there are 60 million people globally who have been forced from their homes by conflict, persecution and prejudice.

Addario’s contribution to the exhibition depicts the lives of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims, who are denied citizenship in the largely Buddhist nation. Diop, a fashion photographer, depicts Central African Republic nationals forced to flee to Cameroon. Fine-artist Iturbide traveled to Mexico and Colombia to document communities of displaced Central Americans. Schoeller brings his signature close-up portraiture to his stories of refugees in the United States, while Stoddart’s documentary work tells the story of refugees traveling from the shores of Greece to Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia on their way to new lives in Germany.

“The photographs in this exhibit portray [the refugees’] courage, resilience and strength,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi in a statement. “They show that this is not an anonymous movement; these are ordinary people, who have been forced to flee.”

The exhibition, which is free to the public, includes a documentary film that follows the photographers and augments the stories told by their photos. Accompanying lectures and events will be presented throughout the exhibition’s run. —Conor Risch
