Stopping Time in a Shipping Container

Time is key to Vera Lutter‘s work. To make her large scale, one-of-a-kind black and white prints, some as tall as 8 or 9 feet, Lutter exposes paper sometimes for days or even weeks in cameras she builds from shipping containers or out of entire rooms. In the resulting images, any movement has been stilled by the long exposure, erasing people and things in transit and leaving only solid structures. Often working in urban and industrial centers, Lutter’s images, on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston until March 20, are mysterious and monumental—slow, hand-made records of a fast-moving world.
