Michael Lange: Forests Dark and Deep

German photographer Michael Lange’s large-format color landscape images are described as “invitingly eerie” by photo-eye Gallery, the host of WALD | FLUSS, Lange’s first solo exhibition in the United States. Opening August 28, the images on display, which are indeed dark yet somehow bright at the same time, have been selected from Lange’s monographs WALD and FLUSS, both published by Hatje Cantz.

WALD, German for woods, “focuses on the forest as a symbolic and emotional location,” writes photo-eye. “The etymology of wald finds its root in the word ‘wild,’—uninhabited, untamed, or unrestrained.” Lange’s photographs, taken at dusk or twilight, embrace this idea, “capturing the primordial essence of the forest as a place of wonder, peril, and promise.” FLUSS, German for river, is Lange’s interpretation of the waters of the Rhine, which he photographed over three years.

In Lange’s words the series express “a longing for pacification, depth, and beauty—the desire to lose one self. A part of my work is to trace the unceasing process of change until a landscape is in harmony with the internal images that express my feelings.”

Lange (born 1953) is a self-taught photographer who has exhibited extensively in Europe including Robert Morat Galerie, Hamburg; Alfred Ehrhardt Foundation, Berlin; Photofest “La Gacilly,” France; and Art Cologne. He has received grants from both the Culture Foundation, Bonn, and the Kulturfonds VG BildKunst. Lange currently lives and works in Hamburg, Germany.
