To help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the passage of New York City’s Landmarks Law, Monacelli Press has released Saving Place: 50 Years of New York City Landmarks, a new book that includes photographs by noted architectural photographer Iwan Baan of current street views and buildings throughout all five boroughs. The book pairs Baan’s photographs with historic images, and essays from notable New Yorkers and preservationists.

“The destruction of McKim Mead & White’s monumental Penn Station in the mid-1960s catalyzed the adoption of New York City’s Landmarks Law, which established the parameters for protecting and preserving buildings and places that represent the city’s history,” Monacelli said in a statement about the book. “Saving Place tells the story of the more than 31,000 landmark properties in New York City: how these sites were chosen, how landmarking has impacted the fabric of the city, and what the future holds.”

A concurrent exhibition, “Saving Place: 50 Years of New York City Landmarks,” runs through September 13, 2015 at the Museum of the City of New York. For more information, please visit the museum’s website.
