As a mother, photographer and the director of PhotoNOLA, an annual photography festival in New Orleans, Jennifer Shaw knows what it’s like to multitask. Adopting the old adage “photograph what you know,” Shaw has spent the last few years working on “The Space Between,” a black-and-white series that balances dreamlike visions of childhood and the day-to-day reality of family life.

“I work from a place of intuition, capturing the action as it unfolds and stealing sidelong glances at the details of our environments,” Shaw writes in a statement about the series. “The images are juxtaposed to create an introspective narrative, mining the richly ambiguous state of parenthood, akin to the murky realm between a river’s glittering surface and its hidden undercurrents.”

“The Space Between” was exhibited in 2013 at Guthrie Contemporary in New Orleans, and at the Baum Gallery of Art at The University of Central Arkansas. New images from the series are currently showing at Guthrie through August 31, 2015, alongside Jane Fulton Alt’s “Look and Leave.” Shaw is also a “Featured Artist” during Rayko Photo Center’s 8th Annual International Juried Plastic Camera Show, which is showing through May 3, 2015 in San Francisco.
