This year’s edition of the AIPAD Photography Show New York will be its 35th. The art fair, which hosts 89 fine-art photo galleries from North America, Europe, Asia and South America, is put on by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers, and features contemporary, modern and 19th century photographs, photo-based art, video and new media.
For a gallery hopper, the show is an annual opportunity to browse the world’s art galleries’ stock of fine-art photography. For photographers, it’s a chance to survey the current market, compare sale prices and, if you’re lucky, meet gallerists.
The show often highlights what gallerists consider their most salable works. Work that will be on display in exhibitors’ booths include 1919 Alfred Stieglitz portrait of Georgia O’Keeffe on view at Edwynn Houk, selections from the archive of recently deceased Ray K. Metzer at Laurence Miller and Bill Owens’ “Hockney Painted this Pool,” a 1980 archival pigment print from his “Suburbia” series, exhibited by PDNB Gallery of Dallas.
This year the show is highlighting Latin American photography: Robert Mann gallery is showing work by Cuban artists—many never-before-seen in the U.S.—in conjunction with its spring show, “The Light in Cuban Eyes.” (Lake Forest Press published a book of the same name in March.) Throckmorton Fine Art is showing Mario Algaze’s street photography and urban landscapes from Latin America’s major capital cities. Lisa Sette Gallery is showing work by Luis Gonzalez Palma, including his portraits of Mayans and mixedrace Guatemalans; the work consists of collage, paint and exotic photographic techniques, and was published as a book by Fabrica in Madrid in February.
ART21 associate curator Wesley Miller will also present a selection of short documentary films on photographic artists working today, including LaToya Ruby Frazier, Daniel Gordon and Liz Magic Laser. For the first time, the AIPAD show and opening gala on April 15 will benefit the 92nd Street Y, the 140-year old nonprofit cultural center in New York City.
AIPAD opens with a public preview this evening from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The show runs through Sunday, April 19.
