France is the birthplace of cinema, thanks to brothers Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean Lumière, who patented the cinematograph and made their first feature film in 1894. Since then, French cinema has continued to push the boundaries of art and film. To bring French cinema to New York, the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Unifrance Films host an annual event, Rendez-Vous with French Cinema. To complement this year’s event, The Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York hosted a group exhibition featuring images made by film directors, cinematographers, photographers and actors (Raymond Depardon, Agnès Godarrd and Ed Lachman).

The exhibition was created by film producer Anne-Dominique Toussaint, who opened Galerie Cinema, an art gallery entirely devoted to cinema, in Paris’ Marais district in September 2013. “Cinema and art create universal and permanent bridges, and Paris and New York interact as two beacons of contemporary creativity,” Toussaint said in a statement about the project.

The pop-up Galerie Cinema will be on view through Friday, April 10, 2015 from 11am – 7pm in the Cultural Services of the French Embassy at 972 Fifth Avenue at 79th Street. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
