William Klein, born and raised in New York, spent the summer of 2013 exploring Coney Island and Brighton Beach. An exhibition of that work is on view through May 2 at Howard Greenberg Gallery, and Klein also published a book, BROOKLYN + KLEIN (Contrasto). “Klein employed his motto ‘no rules, no limits, no holding back’ to capture the exuberance of Brooklyn life,” the gallery said in a statement about the exhibition, “William Klein + Brooklyn.” “From the West Indian Day Parade to a Hasidic prayer and study session to a Williamsburg tattoo parlor, Klein has portrayed Brooklyn in all of its lively cultural diversity.”

Sony’s new Global Imaging Ambassadors Program helped support the project and produced a short behind-the-scenes video about the work.

Klein, was voted one of the 30 most important photographers in 1963 by Photokina. He’s published numerous books (New York, 1956; Life is Good and Good For You in New York, 1958, Rome, 1958; Moscow, 1964; Tokyo, 1964), and has also directed more than 20 films in the past 25 years (Cassius the Great, Loin du Vietnam).
