It’s hard to imagine in today’s world of camera phones, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and the like, that there was a time when photos of yourself, friends and family were few and far between. Cameras existed but not everyone had one. Fewer photos were taken because film and processing cost money and patience—prints could take up to a week to be developed.

An appreciation for analog photography is what motivated photographer Nina Manandhar to create her blog, What We Wore. The blog, filled with crowd-sourced images of individuals, families and groups, is a big collage of British fashion from the 1950s through the present day.

Images from the blog were recently compiled into a book, What We Wore: A People’s History of British Style (Prestel, November 2014), which “encompasses the worlds of Mods, punks, ravers, grime kids, and everything in between, with photos submitted by everyday British people as well as celebrities, including Tracey Emin, Jeremy Deller, Jazzie B., DJ Harvey, and Don Letts.”
