Though the museum doors have closed in anticipation of a move to a new building, the International Center of Photography (ICP) is presenting a new exhibition at their educational space across the street. The artists in “Take Ten” are all alumnae of the School at ICP’s full-time programs, and all female. The show explores topics like sex trafficking in Eastern Europe, racial identity, beauty, digital identity and religion.
Co-curated by Alison Morley, Chair of the school’s Documentary Photography & Photojournalism Program, and Nancy Borowick (whose work is also included in the show), “Take Ten” features work by Giulia Bianchi, Nona Faustine, Annie Ling, Ilana Panich-Linsman, Tiana Markova-Gold, Julie Nymann, Laís Pontes, Lara Tabet and Alexia Webster.
“While the images share commonalities of a focus on women, documented by women, each project tells a different and unique story, and I think this will make the show a meaningful experience for anyone who comes to see it,” Borowick told PDN via email. “I have to say I’m particularly emotional about the show because my piece, focused on my mom as she faced cancer alongside my late father, strikes a personal chord. My mother passed away one month ago and while she won’t be at the exhibition, I know she is there in spirit, and in each of the frames from our story. My images line both sides of a narrow hallway, allowing you to feel the intimacy of the story as you are physically close to the images.”
Producing the show was no easy task. “This was my first time curating an exhibition and it has certainly opened my eyes up to how much work goes into a show,” Borowick says. “Managing ten photographers, located in [different] countries and across time zones around the world had me on my computer communicating with them at all hours of the day and night.”
“Take Ten” opens Friday, January 16, with a reception for the artists at 6pm. The show will be on view through March 15, 2015. In addition to the exhibition, ICP has invited a handful of contemporary photographers to take over their Instagram account through the run of the show. Artists include Nona Faustine, Malin Fezehai, Rania Matar, Magda Rakita, Tatiana Cardeal, Kiana Hayeri, Ciara Leeming and Annie Ling. For more information, please visit the website.
