PDN Photo of the Day

Wyoming Sunrise

Photographer Jamie Kripke is based in Boulder, Colorado and shoots for a wide array of clients—AAA, Chipotle, Gatorade, Timbuk2, The New York Times, Wired, Fortune and Bon Appetit, to name a few. Many of his assignments require travel, including a recent assignment for Field & Stream in Sheridan, Wyoming. Kripke decided to drive over 7 hours each way so he could explore the area, giving him time to make personal work. This series was photographed in Casper, Wyoming, in the early hours of the morning, just after sunrise.

Images in this series were influenced by painter Richard Diebenkorn’s “Ocean Park” paintings. “I was looking at [them] recently and love the compositions and the way the colors are layered over each other,” Kripke told PDN via email. “So I started messing around with these images, first by responding to the composition of the images, drawing masks, then working with the color until it felt right.” All of the images were shot digitally, and Kripke played with layer masks and color applications in Photoshop.

Kripke has played with color a lot recently in works he released earlier this year: Expanding the Fall Palette, Building Ello and The Mesa Lab. To see more of Kripke’s work, please visit his website. —Amy Wolff
