PDN Photo of the Day

Various Viewpoints

Clayton Cotterell‘s limited edition book, Arrangements, includes an artful mix of objects, landscapes, colors, textures and moments. The book “revels in the spontaneity of the photographic medium, allowing for succinct encounters with light, color and form to guide both the content and open-ended, sensuous meaning of the work,” notes the book’s publisher, Ampersand Editions, in a statement about the work. “Seeking out naturally occurring abstractions, the photographs Cotterell has made are global in reach, yet are not about any particular place.”

Cotterell is also represented by Ampersand, a Portland-based gallery. Myles Haselhort, owner and curator of Ampersand, worked closely with Cotterell on the edit for the book. “I had maybe 60 or so photographs I was considering,” Cotterell told PDN via email. “Myles and Carey [Haselhort’s wife, who designs all of Ampersand’s books] cut a few, for good reason, and we even added a few in that I never considered. We are all friends so the collaboration is always very open.”
