Guy Bourdin: Image Maker

Parisian-born Guy Bourdin’s well-crafted fashion images helped sell clothing, accessories and beauty products—but he didn’t create them in typical ways. Like his mentor Man Ray, Bourdin pushed the boundaries of photography, taking fashion images beyond the norm. This month London’s Somerset House hosts “Guy Bourdin: Image Maker,” the United Kingdom’s largest exhibition of the work of the influential fashion photographer. The show includes more than 100 photographs and previously unseen work, including paintings, sketches and notebooks. “Along with certain American photographers, notably Edward Weston, Bourdin recognized a concern with formal perfection and extremely high finish that became his own objective, one perfectly adapted to the deceptive sophistication of fashion imagery, the landscape in which he developed his ideas for over thirty years,” Somerset House said in a statement about the exhibition.

Guy Bourdin: Image Maker” opens November 27 and runs through March 15, 2015 at Somerset House, Embankment Galleries, South Wing.
