Queer Kids: Portraits of Today’s Youth

M. Sharkey has spent the last 8 years documenting Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) youth communities across the United States and in Europe. Combining environmental portraiture with studio work, Sharkey photographs his subjects as they are, and how they want to be seen, allowing them to have a voice.

“I think I’ll always be drawn to this amazingly brave group,” Sharkey said in a statement about the work. “Their strength is a continual source of inspiration for me. It is their defiance that I want to capture in the portraits. What I hope people might also see is the delight that is the domain of a new generation: the sheer joy of being able to stand up and be seen without shame.”

Sharkey’s solo exhibition,”QUEER KIDS,” opens Thursday, October 30 and runs through January 4, 2015 at the Stonewall National Museum and Archives in Fort Lauderdale. To learn more about Sharkey’s project, check out his Facebook page.
