Robert Mapplethorpe’s Study of Form

“I’m looking for perfection in form. I do that with portraits. I do it with flowers. It’s not different from one subject to the next. I am trying to capture what could be sculpture.
– Robert Mapplethorpe, Perfection in Form (teNeues, 2009).

Perhaps one of the most famous and controversial artists to emerge from the late 1970s and 1980s, Robert Mapplethorpe died in 1989 at the age of forty-three. This exhibition will present 25 photographs taken between 1978 and 1989, focusing on two major subjects of his oeuvre, human and botanical forms. In these photographs, which exemplify classical ideals of form and proportion, Mapplethorpe used light and shadow, form and formlessness, symmetry and asymmetry to capture perfection and beauty. – Courtesy Weinstein Gallery

“Robert Mapplethorpe” runs through July 19, Tuesday-Saturday 12pm–5pm, at Weinstein Gallery, in Minneapolis.
