Candida Höfer Prowls the Villa Borghese

Thanks to an amazing assignment, Candida Höfer, the renowned interiors photographer, was given access to photograph Rome’s  Villa Borghese, a jewel box of a museum whose collection includes works by Bernini and Raphael. Höfer, a former student of Bernd and Hilla Becher, was commissioned by the museum in 2012 to photograph its grand halls and its works of art. She photographed the spaces using only natural light and long exposures. A private view of her exhibition “Villa Borghese” takes place tonight at Ben Brown Fine Arts in London, and the show will run through September 19. The exhibition is both a homecoming and a celebration. When Ben Brown Fine Arts opened ten years ago, its first show featured Höfer’s series “Libraries.” Since then, the gallery has shown her images of palaces, theaters, churches and more.
