The Social Scene: Society Galas in San Francisco

Ralph Waldo Emerson said “society is a masked ball, where every one hides his real character, and reveals it by hiding.San Francisco-based photojournalist Laura Morton allows us glimpses into high society’s playground with her current project, “The Social Scene: Society Galas in San Francisco.” Morton was captivated by this elite group, “whose members attend extravagant, fanciful parties to celebrate donating crucial sums to local charities and organizations,” The Half King said in a statement announcing Morton’s upcoming show there. “Bright, immediate, and timeless, Morton’s images give the fabulous moment and the lonesome, isolated moment equal value.” “The Social Stage” opens this evening with a reception and discussion about the work with Morton and James Estrin, Senior Staff photographer at the New York Times and co-editor of Lens Blog. The work, part of the Half King Photography Series, curated by Anna Van Lenten and James Price, will be on view through January 12, 2014 at the Half King, a restaurant/bar in New York City owned by writers Sebastian Junger and Scott Anderson.
