Lewis Hine: Social Reform Photographer

Two exhibitions of Lewis Hine’s photography are currently on display at the International Center of Photography in New York City through January 19, 2014. The exhibition “Lewis Hine” is organized by the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, contains the world’s largest collection of Hine’s work. The exhibition features an overview of Hine’s life and work with over 150 prints from their collection, and it includes his earliest photographs of immigrants arriving on Ellis Island around 1905 and his series on the construction of the Empire State Building in 1932. The second exhibition, “The Future of America: Lewis Hine’s New Deal Photographs,” includes lesser-known photographs taken when Hine was chief photographer for the National Research Project (NRP), a division of the federal government’s Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was created by President Roosevelt in 1935 and employed millions of Americans to carry out public works projects.
