Youth Reborn

“‘Rebirth’ is an underwater portrait project where the subject is slowly enveloped in warm water,” says photographer Yana Toyber. “The water instantly cleanses the subject while I take photos of the process.” Water is commonly included in religious ceremonies and rituals, and seen as a purifier. Toyber’s project explores the various meanings. “Subjects are told to relax as they are covered in water and essentially drowned for short periods of time. Each subject has a variety of expressions throughout the process.” All of the subjects are peers of Toyber’s, all young and within the same age range. “I’m not exactly sure if they were experiencing their own rebirth, however, I suspect that they experienced some sort of spiritual and physical intimacy as they were fully submerged in the water,” Toyber told PDN via email
