Images from documentary photographer Nina Berman‘s project, “Fracking: The Shale Play,” will be only display at Photoville. Berman’s series offers a look at the affected lives of people in the Marcellus Shale region of Pennsylvania. Marcellus Shale, named for a large quantity of black shale near Marcellus, New York, extends throughout much of the Appalachian Basin and is an area affected by “fracking,” a term used to describe the extensive drilling for natural gas.

Berman said in a statement, “In these images, all made in rural Pennsylvania, I sought to capture the strange beckoning and fear where the landscapes shifts from natural to industrial, where what appears as rays of sunshine are actually methane flares, where pitch dark dirt roads, end in a burst of artificial light.” Photoville opens today, Thursday, September 19, 2013, at 4pm and runs through Sunday, September 29.
