PDN Photo of the Day

Like Oil and Water

“Fox River Derivatives,” by Chicago-based photographer Peter Hoffman, questions our relationship with natural resources. Hoffman told PDN via e-mail, “I photographed the Fox River in the Chicago suburbs and wanted to let water and fossil fuels have a voice in the image-making process, so I exposed my negatives to these substances. I felt like it was a visual metaphor of sorts for what our appetite for these resources could potentially do to our landscape. The only computer work here is scanning and a bit of color correction. For me, honestly, this work was very experimental and more about the process.” Two images from Hoffman’s “Fox River Derivatives” series are currently on view through August 30 at the Catherine Edelman Gallery as part of the “The Chicago Project,” an online exhibition devoted to new and established photographers in the Chicago area.
